This is a very easy basic pattern modified into a sun hat. You can see the basic pattern here. I was actually making a beanie when I accidentally used a smaller hook size and the beanie turn out to be very stiff, not what a beanie should be like. I was just about to unwind the hat when I had an idea. Since sun hat are stiff and has a structure, I continue it with a shade. I just used some creativity and voila! A beautiful sun hat that can be made on a weekend.
THINGS YOU WOULD NEED:
- Crochet hook no.5
- DK Yarn, one ball will do. If you want a wider shade rim use 2 balls.
- You will need another color of yarn if you want to add different color at the curve as I did. If you don’t want to, don’t change color.
ABOUT STITCHES
Please make stitches tight because a sun hat has a structure. If your stitches are loose, the hat will turn out wobbly.
When starting a new row, make sure to start with 2 chains for a double crochet row and 1 chain for a single crochet row. These are not written in the pattern but are universally understood by all cricketers.

FOR THE CAP
Make a magic ring
Step 1. 14 dc
- Step 2. 2dc in every stitch
- Step 3. Dc in every stitch. You will notice that it has begins to curve upwards.
- Step 4. Dc,2dc,dc,2dc…..
- Step 5. Dc,dc,2dc,dc,dc,2dc…..
- Step 6. Dc,dc,dc,2dc,dc,dc,dc,2dc……
- Step 7. Dc in every stitch
Step 8. Make row 7 till ears (I made the last two rows in white color)
FOR THE SHADE
- Step 9-12. Repeat rows 2,3,4,5 ( repeat steps 6 and 7 if you want a wider shade rim. I just stopped at step 5).
- Step 13 And 14. (two rows) Sc, bind off.
I water spray and ironed the shade rim to make it straight. You can use a starch spray before ironing to make it extra crisp. Decorate the sun hat with a pretty flower to make it fancy and girly. Watch the little girl’s eyes gleam up with excitement when she sees this pretty crochet sun hat.
